Anyone else have this experience where it’s WAY more comfortable talking to younger people about this diagnosis? All my friends under 30, I’ve told; and it’s no big deal to them, I’ve even had one say “easier than diabetes.”
But I haven’t told almost anyone my age (40) or older, because those I have have that dreaded “you’re gonna die” expression right away. And always take my hand, look lovingly at me and apologize: “I’m so sorry.”
Guess it’s because the younger set didn't live thru the AIDS… read more
That's definitely the reason! When I told my parents, I was telling them that the guy tried to tell me he had HIV and that i didn't care. My mom blurts out "I wouldn't sleep with someone with HIV with 30 condoms!" WOW, THANKS MOM! I said so I'm less than desirable and nonsexual now cuz I have it?? She said would you sleep with someone with HIV even with a condom? Well, I am fortunately now seeing a man that was pursuing me even before I was diagnosed and he is fine with condoms and will be going with me to my first ID follow up appointment to get on Descovy.
Hi @Un miembro de myHIVteam. I’ve gotten both reactions from both old and young people but I agree with you that younger people generally have had the better response.
I was diagnosed at 53 yo so I was one of those older people who needed to unlearn the old way of thinking, this is a death sentence and I quickly learned the new truth that this is a treatable condition myself. I was able to adapt fairly quickly once I had all the facts in front of me. I’m a science based person and I think that the more that facts come out about how this is no longer a death sentence the better we’ll all be.
Tom.
Yes indeed, I believe that is the reason.
