Últimamente, he mantenido ese peso.

I am curious to know if it is healthy to have a stable weight, while living with HIV? My weight is normal at 145.2. For the past few days it's at that current weight. What's having a stable weight does for my overall health?

Me he agotado por completo. Antes pesaba como 135 y ahora peso 205. Si sigo engordando, voy a empezar a pesarme en kilos.

I have really porked out. I was like 135 and now I'm at 205. Is I get any bigger, I'm going to start weighing myself in stones.

Beneficios a largo plazo

I'm NOT a doctor, this is NOT a diagnosis, just information.
It is a very common concern for people living with HIV to worry about weight fluctuations, especially because historical narratives around the virus often focused on "wasting syndrome."

The short answer is: Yes, having a stable, normal weight is an excellent sign for your overall health.

Here is a breakdown of why weight stability matters and what it indicates about your body’s current state.

Why Weight Stability is a "Win"
In the context of HIV, a stable weight suggests that your body is in a state of homeostasis. This means your energy intake (what you eat) is well-balanced with your energy expenditure (your metabolism and activity).

Managed Inflammation: When HIV is well-controlled by antiretroviral therapy (ART), chronic inflammation is reduced. High levels of inflammation often lead to unexplained weight loss.

Nutrient Absorption: A steady weight indicates that your digestive system is effectively absorbing the nutrients from your food.

Metabolic Health: Maintaining a "normal" BMI range (which 145 lbs typically falls into for most average heights) reduces the risk of secondary conditions like Type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease, which are important to monitor as one ages with HIV.

Understanding Daily Fluctuations
It is worth noting that seeing the exact same number (145.2) for several days is actually quite impressive! Most people see "noise" in their weight due to:

Hydration levels: Water retention can shift weight by 1–3 lbs daily.

Sodium intake: Salt holds onto water.

Glycogen stores: How much energy is currently stored in your muscles.

The Big Picture: While your weight is stable now, don't be alarmed if it shifts by a pound or two next week. In clinical terms, "stability" usually means staying within a 3–5% range over several months.

Long-Term Benefits
Staying at a healthy, stable weight does a few key things for your longevity:

Immune Support: It ensures your body has the protein stores necessary to maintain T-cell production.

Bone Density: Maintaining a healthy weight (and incorporating resistance exercise) helps protect bone mineral density, which can sometimes be affected by certain HIV medications.

Psychological Peace: Removing the stress of "weight tracking" allows you to focus on the quality of your nutrition rather than just the quantity.

I am probably not the best to answer this - but I believe that it maintaining a stable healthy weight is always a good sign HIV or not. For me, weight has always been a major struggle. When I was Dx:AIDS in 2010 my weight was 90lbs (not good for someone who stands at 6'0) then I stayed around 105lbs for a long time before finally settling at 125-128 ~ still a far cry from a healthy weight, but I will take that over the initial 90lbs I was at.

- Tu sistema inmunitario funciona mejor

Is maintaining a stable weight healthy when living with HIV?

Yes, maintaining a stable weight is generally a positive sign for your overall health when living with HIV. A stable weight at a healthy level suggests that your body is in balance and your treatment is working well.

Here's what a stable, healthy weight can mean for you:

- Your immune system is functioning better
- You're getting adequate nutrition
- Your HIV treatment is effective
- You have a lower risk of developing complications like heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure
- Better physical and emotional well-being

Weight fluctuations in either direction can sometimes signal issues. Significant weight loss might indicate problems with your immune system or opportunistic infections, while rapid weight gain could be related to medication side effects or other health conditions.

Since your weight is stable at a normal level, this is a good indicator that your body is responding well to treatment. Continue monitoring your weight and maintaining healthy eating habits and regular physical activity.

If you notice any sudden changes in your weight, it's worth discussing with your doctor to ensure everything remains on track with your health.
