What is a 'rule' for life that you inherited from your parents or your culture that you have officially decided to break?

Edmore, MI

How did it feel the first time you consciously chose to do the opposite of that rule? Was it terrifying or liberating?

A rule I had to break was thinking I had to keep everything to myself and just push through it. That asking for help or showing what I was really dealing with meant I was weak.

The first time I went against that, it felt uncomfortable as hell. But at the same time, it was the first step toward actually changing anything.

It wasn’t clean or easy, but it was necessary.

My parents never wanted me to be the topic of discussion at other people's dinner tables.

I broke that rule because if people stop talking about me, I may be forgotten.

Don't forget about me...

Not prescribing to organized religion and not calling myself a Christian.I am a child of God which to me encompasses all of my being. My mom was a devout Catholic but for me I had so many questions and religion doesn't allow that.I always wondered why my mom had to go into a booth and tell her sins to a man and he would absolve her sins with repeating 10 hail marys. Why not take it to God himself? So,yeah I have a personal relationship with God which enriches my spirituality.

He tenido mucha más visibilidad.

Growing up Mormon. Even though most of my adulthood. I still had a lot of respect for the faith. Meaning not watching certain tv shows, two broke girls, big bang theory etc. i was in my 40s when I broke away from. Only watching wholesome tv shows. The first show I remember watching was Breaking Amish franchise on Netflix. The show featured Amish and mennonites breaking away and moving to big cities. I think it was Around 2015 ish I was watching it. At that time i was selling cell phones in target. One day before work i was watching an episode or two. One person in the store shopping who was a Mennonite. When I saw him i had the look like I was very guilty, hand caught in the cookie jar. I felt so guilty about watching something that wasn’t morally correct. It also happened again at another members house who watched the sitcoms I mentioned. I was so embarrassed and just wanted to change the channel. Im finally okay watching tv shows with adult situations and play on words.
Living here in Los Angeles has been good for me. I have gotten a lot more exposure. Unlike back home where the family is.

Mmm.

Hmm. Well my mom comes from confederate roots, firmly there. My dad union roots. So one was always going to not be the line I followed.
