It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The milestone anniversary brings back a lot of memories as we remember the lives lost, the heroes who saved thousands of people, and how our way of life has changed since then.

Most of us, of a certain age, can remember where we were when the attacks happened and everything about that day. Whether we were directly impacted by the tragedy or not, it still affects us in lingering ways.

Tomorrow, we remember the attacks… read more

It was an event that brought one world to an end and birthed this one. I am saddened by this world. It seems harsher, more divided.

Not only can I remember that day 20 years ago, but 20 years ago the day before, I would have never remembered the week before that. Exactly one week before 9/11 happened, my brother and my dad (each one not knowing the other was coming to visit) came out to visit me. My dad had gone back to New York the day before 9/11 and my brother was scheduled to go back to New York the day AFTER 9/11. I was so lucky to have my family here in Michigan while all this was happening knowing that they were safe. My brother stayed another 4 days, and Matthew Dishong and I drove my brother back home the next Saturday. When we crossed into New York State, EVERY SINGLE BRIDGE overpass had a United States flag hanging on it. EVERY SINGLE BRIDGE! Coming back home we came through Canada. People kept honking at us as we drove. They gave us the peace sign or the I love you sign. We finally figured out it was because of our license plate, being a United States citizen, they were showing their support for us. I had to call my Aunt who lives in Port Huron and asked about the border crossing. She had told me I needed to get there BEFORE rush hour started. She had said if I got there during rush hour, there was a minimum of a 7-hour wait crossing the border. So I picked up my speed on the freeway. I got to the border barely before rush hour. We spent 4 hours waiting to cross the bridge. The wait was so long, we could have taken out our grill and grilled on the bridge. There were cars that overheated on the bridge or ran out of gas. So they had to wait for tow trucks to come adding more time for them on the bridge. We finally crossed the bridge, got through customs on fumes. As we pulled into the first gas station we came to, we ran out of gas and coasted to the fuel pump. 2 weeks I will never forget!

Sitting having my coffee and watching the TV in Queens New York I watched as the first plane hit the first Tower. Not believing what I was seeing I called my father in Flushing and we both cried... I remember to this day,.. two grown men crying telling each other they love each other after the second plane hit ..it took me therapy and a long time to go back to Ground Zero as I was devastated, totally devastated that this has happened to the city I love and was raised in.. I had left a brokerage job at the One World Trade Center the year before, on the 90 something floor.

I woke up in the hospital after being in a 11 day coma and being told that I would never wake-up my health care advocate and my pastor were there when they took me off life support. I asked what the movie on the TV was to pastor Jim, his wife turned white and went to the nurses station saying I was awake and talking. The nurse said he can't be she said go look for yourself. Pastor Jim said it was a terrorist attack. Then all the doctors came in and 3 days later I went home. This was the first of 3 times that I was not supposed to live. Now you know why I believe so strongly in God and know God had a purpose for me. Pastor David
