What's the 'invisible labor' of living with HIV?

We talk a lot about 'adherence' to meds, but what about the 'invisible labor' of living with HIV? I’m talking about the mental gymnastics of scheduling pharmacy refills, navigating insurance, or even just the split-second decision of whether to disclose to a new friend. What part of the 'behind-the-scenes' work feels the heaviest for you lately?

What’s on your 'Invisible To-Do List' today?

We all know the basics—take the meds, see the doc. But what about the Invisible Labor?

It’s the hours spent on the phone with insurance. It’s the mental energy of deciding whether to disclose to a new friend. It’s the "vibe check" we do in every room we walk into. It’s the constant math of balancing our health with our 40-hour work weeks and our families.

For me, the invisible labor is keep working full time, while trying to juggle doctor appointments, while still also doing things at home, like laundry, cleaning, dog walking.

What is the part of your health journey that no one sees, but takes up the most of your energy? Let's acknowledge the work we're doing behind the scenes.

The real invisible labor is carrying around the knowledge thaf your Poz but that not everyone will accept the fact .

That's a good question. I believe that necessary approach for your health like talking to the doctors making sure your insurance is up to date privacy disclosure who and what not to tell make sure you have housing food in the refrigerator to maintain the qualities of your health. If you're working full time get plenty of rest cuz you got to maintain the bills to keep a household that's the only thing I could think of it's a lot I tell you that much. But you you must stay on top of your treatment plan

I would agree. The psychological stress is the biggest factor. Deciding who you want to know and who you don't want to know for fear of their judgment. I'm currently lucky and grateful for full-time work and great health insurance. My medication is free. My infectious disease doctor is different from my primary and I really like him and see him twice a year to go over blood work. I'm currently undetectable and have been for the past 10 years plus. I want to do more to advocate for others who are HIV+. I'm currently working on a journal article about HIVE-themed young adult literature and how to approach it in the language arts classroom. That makes me feel good. Like I can contribute something to society.
