Who has 'Post-Traumatic Growth,' and would like to share their experience?

There’s a concept called 'Post-Traumatic Growth'—the idea that surviving a major life shock can actually make you a stronger, more intentional person. Looking back at your journey, is there a part of your personality or a boundary you’ve set that is actually better now than it was before your diagnosis?

I after getting the news that I was poz avoided the subject whenever it came up by changing the subject .

Then along came the diagnosis if Aids and my disappearance from the public eye because of the concussion and ensuing bout with Aids related dementia / Aids dementia complex .

When I finally got back into the public eye I once again began my regime of avoidance when the topic arose .

Then came the time when I was in a contest and there was a speech portion that I had not prepared for so blurted out that " I have Aids but am undectable " .

Well when I heard my own words comming back to ne thru the speakers I knew there was no turning back .

My 90 second speech kind of went into 10 minutes of amazement by the masses therein .

But when I held my head high and was proud that I had grabbed the shroud of stigma and flung it around there was a defining round of applause .

My next " regular checkup ( az if there's a dam thing regular about me :) ! ) upon my telling my id pcp what I had done heard " that might be why some of my patients have become verbal about their health instead of making me pull teeth to find out what was going on with them " .

So apparently my holding my head high and outing myself started a " comming out movement / trend to where folks were no longer be afraid / skeered to admit their status publicly .....

So it is true that it takes just one voice to start the wheels in motion :) .

He avanzado mucho.

I go to support groups to hear other people stories and a lot of people been dealing with with it the 80s medication. I’m coming a long way. I’m lucky that I only had to take one pill a day. I do look back on how I get infected. I can’t change it, but you do make me think more positive that I’m going to be don’t give up, but I know who infecting me this times that I want to confront a person but what good would that do when the damage is already done I let God handle that part.

Strong emotionally charge situation/events can cause the response of PTSD. Emotions are a response in general to those events. Difference between a good response and a bad response is perception of the event. Even in the most traumatic of even growth is possible. One thing I lean that has helped me is that I am not a victim of my circumstances, I am a survivor of them and therefore even if at ti.es it may be hard and complicated I must muster perseverance and move on and not be stuck in the past letting those events dominate my life. Forgiveness is a very powerful tool in those situation because I do not want the pain that was cause by someone else control my life. I want to be free from that pain. In the end kindness is stronger that hate.

Otro miembro compartió: "Ya no oculto mis dificultades.

Have you experienced growth after your HIV diagnosis that's made you stronger?

Many myHIVteam members have shared powerful stories of post-traumatic growth. The journey often involves moving through difficult emotions like fear, anger, and depression, but ultimately finding new strength and purpose.

Some common areas of growth include:

* Self-acceptance and self-love - Learning to be kinder to yourself and letting go of harsh self-judgment
* Setting boundaries - Prioritizing your own needs without apologizing, including rest when tired
* Authenticity - No longer hiding struggles or pretending to have it all together
* Gratitude - Appreciating what you have rather than focusing on what's been lost
* Purpose - Becoming an educator or advocate for others living with HIV

One myHIVteam member reflected that after 18 years of living with HIV, they now see themselves as "a wonderful human being with dignity and self-worth," recognizing that chronic illness can make "our light shine through every shade of darkness."

Another member shared: "I'm not hiding my struggles anymore. If I'm tired, I'm going to rest. Hearing from others with HIV has taught me that I have to prioritize ME."

The path isn't linear—you might revisit difficult feelings—but many find that surviving this challenge ultimately helps them grow in compassion, understanding, and self-acceptance.

Si estás enfermo, no entres. Si no puedes verme como estoy, no me importa. No te necesito.
