I am trying to wrap my head around what a real cocktail was in the past. When I received my HIV diagnoses in 2012 doctors put me on Atripla, a 3-in-1 pill, that very same day. No problem @Un miembro de myHIVteam. It does take me back so long, the exactness is a bit vague! I remember the indinavir (placebo) was 3 tabs TDS, I took them at 08.00, 16.00 and 00.00 - this meant that for the 3 hours around this (2hrs before and 1 after) I wasn’t allowed to eat more than 5g of fat. Kind of difficult sorting out meals but I did learn that many fruit sweets were virtually fat-free! lol. The TDS abacavir had to be spaced out around this, and remember setting my alarm each night for during the night, as well as taking AZT and 3TC. Did annoy me a bit to find out after nearly 2 years that the indinavir was a placebo and I needn’t have had the fat restriction!!
Abacavir was then put into Combivir (I took with AZT) then abacavir/AZT/3TC was combined into Trizivir, before I went onto Kivexa/AZT. There was quite a bit of controversy regarding kivexa as people were dying from heart problems (hence the alert card), so then went onto Truvada and nevirapine before changing the Truvada to Descovy as it’s better for the kidneys and bone density (kind of glad as have since been diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and osteoporosis).

@Un miembro de myHIVteam is correct there were no cocktails just AZT of which I never partook of thankfully because of my long denial after diagnosis. By the time I started getting sick, there were other HIV drugs available. I haven't a clue what they were however at one time I was dosing 16 pills throughout the day. Now I am down to 3 pills once a day. Triumeq, prezista, and ritonavir.
I went straight onto a clinical trial (my choice) when diagnosed in ‘98 - either abacavir or indinavir and a placebo. I remember it was over 30 tablets a day, abacavir had no restrictions but indinavir had the possibility of kidney/liver disorders, had to be taken every 8 hours, and <5g of fat 2 hours before and 1 hour after. Initially for 48 wks, they then extended to 72 and further to 96 wks to gain approval for licensing of abacavir. I was pleased to find out that I was on abacavir at the end (later to become a component of Trizivir and Kivexa), but finally swapped as it had its own complications for the liver and also had a black alert card to be carried due to coronary death. Pleased to say now that of my 20-odd tablets a day, only 3 are ARVs - the power of science.
